Do You Need Special Yoga Clothing?

Yoga has long been popular but recently it’s seen a growth in its popularity all over the world. The reason yoga is so popular is because it’s a form of exercise that pretty much anyone can do. It’s a non-aerobic activity that builds strength, coordination and it can really improve your health, both mental and physical. However, while anyone can do it, it’s not easy. If you’ve ever seen advanced yoga, you know that people who practice yoga twist themselves in ways that almost seem impossible. That’s why it’s necessary to wear the proper yoga clothing. But do you need specialized clothing? No, you don’t need specialized clothing but you do need to be mindful of what you wear. Yoga clothing needs to be loose and non-restricting so that you can bed and twist in various positions. Other than that, you can pretty much wear whatever you want.

Men

Some men believe that yoga is only for women. While it’s true that yoga is dominated by women, many men practice yoga and love it. Mens yoga clothing usually consists of shorts or sweat pants. If you’re going to wear sweat pants, make sure they’re loose enough to do the various moves yoga requires. But generally, shorts and sweats are the go-to yoga clothing for men.

Women

Women typically wear leotards or even sweats, just like mens clothing. Women yoga clothing needs to also be loose but women should be careful of wearing anything that will show too much if twisted into a certain position. For instance, if you’re doing plough, which is where you lie on your back and you raise your legs over your head until your feet touch the floor, women would need to wear yoga clothing that won’t fly open or reveal their intimate parts. That’s why a leotard or other form fitting yoga clothing is usually the norm. But you’ll see that women pretty much wear whatever’s comfortable.

While you’re able to wear anything as yoga clothing, make sure the instructor is ok with what you’re wearing. Some instructors are very picky about what to wear. Some don’t want anything flashy or anything that will stand out, as they believe it will distract the other students. As a general rule, you should always clear your yoga clothing choices with your instructor before class begins. You never know, the instructor may not care but it’s always better to be safe rather than sorry and it takes little effort to ask.
