The word yoga means the union, and it refers to the soul of the individual becoming one with the universal. Yoga is an ancient Indian philosophy of life that encourages the union of body, spirit and mind. Yoga is also about focusing on the single point without any distraction, and following a physical discipline that uses breathing and body to develop mental clarity and self-awareness. It is however important to keep in mind that yoga is not a religion and it does not require any change in the lifestyle.

Various Yoga Postures

Yoga postures or asanas allow us to gain the knowledge and profound understanding of our body. They help in expanding and strengthening of neurological connections that serve us in the spiritual quest of illumination and unity. However, it is very important to do all the asanas under the guidance of experienced professional, else it can be very destructive. Over stretching can cause inflammation, and over a period of time, it can lead to various problems including autoimmune responses, physiological imbalance, anxiety and so on.

Initial sequence of yoga postures consists of few forward bends along with variety of arching positions. There are different degrees of difficulty, and you can choose from beginners, intermediate and experts levels. Morning is the ideal time for doing yoga as the mind is fresh and calm, and with the empty stomach, the movements can be done with vitality and ease.

Before you start, find a quiet place, which is well ventilated and free from dust, unpleasant odors, insect, moisture and draught. Make sure that you wont be distracted for as long as you plan to do yoga. Empty your bladder and bowels, clean the throat and nostril of all mucus, and drink a glass of lukewarm water. Wait for fifteen minutes, and then start your exercise.

Always keep in mind that you must start with the easy postures. Once your body gets accustomed, move on the more difficult poses. Yoga must be able to pep you up, and not impart despondency and weariness.

When practicing yoga, the trainers recommend the sattwik diet, and there must be a gap of at least four hours between each meal. Eat just enough to satisfy your appetite, and avoid overeating and fasting. Non-nutritious and stale food is harmful, so avoid such foods as much as possible. Before starting yoga, wear loose fitting lycra or cotton shirts and pants. During all the yoga postures, the breathing must be deep and long. Keep your mouth closed, and only nose must be used for inhaling and exhaling.
